Alaska: Always wild, leader in sustainable fisheries

Happy Wild Salmon Fisherman

Alaska is characterized by its fishing industry. For millennia, the fish from its sea and rivers have been exploited by man, from the prehistoric aboriginal population to the modern fishing industry of today.

Alaska has abundant reserves of a wide variety of fish species and is home to some of the purest water marine and river habitats.

State and federal institutions work to effectively manage the fishing industry to make it productive and sustainable, clean and healthy.

Alaska is the only state in the United States whose constitution explicitly states that all seafood shall be used, developed and maintained based on the principle of sustainable yield.

The fisheries are rigorously controlled by NMFS scientists and law enforcement agencies.

Natural variability is explicitly taken into account as quotas are percentages of the CMP, which vary each year, rather than percentages of a fixed quantity of fish. The fraction that corresponds to a person does not vary according to the natural fluctuations of fish populations.

Thanks to the abundance of fish and shellfish in the waters of Alaska, the fishing activity is carried out throughout the year, giving life to its economy, and fun in terms of catches since each species has a defined fishing season.

The quality of the fish is better because the quantities that are caught are more uniform and this allows a better handling on board and a fast processing; This also reduces the amount of waste.

The commercial boats make short trips daily, and the fish that is delivered to be processed is very fresh, guaranteeing the highest quality. Thanks to certified traceability systems, it is also possible to follow the movement of this product -through the specified stages of production, processing and distribution- from its arrival in port to its delivery to our kitchens.

Fishing Seasons

In the Alaskan waters, there are abundant varieties of fish and shellfish whose fishing seasons are seasonal and vary according to their variety.

Fishing Methods

Fishing in Alaska is divided into several fishing seasons and different capture methods, depending on the type of fish and/or shellfish that are being caught.

Responsible Fisheries Management

The issue of responsible fisheries management (RFM) is becoming more and more complex, and at the same time, its importance is increasingly crucial.

Sustainability Certificates

The Alaska fishing community follow various standards implemented by the State to ensure that all seafood from Alaska is certified as Wild, Natural, & Sustainable.

Traceability

Traceability is “the ability to follow the movement of a food through specified stages of production, processing and distribution“ (Codex Alimentarius)

Quality

As required by law, all species of Alaskan seafood are processed in facilities that meet all food safety standards and practices.
